So it finally arrived. We had planned this trip to Townsville for a quite a while and we headed off on Thursday morning. After a quick drive up the Kuranda Range, we headed into Mareeba for our favourite coffee...
Finalmente chegou a hora. Tinhamos planeado esta viagem a Townsville ha um bom bocado e na Quinta-feira de manha la fomos. Depois de um curto trajecto ate Kuranda, seguimos em direccao a Mareeba para o nosso cafe favorito...
After our recharge, we headed to Yungaburra on the Tablelands, which is a small little village. It is allegedly home of a community of platypuses.... although we had trouble just seeing one!
Depois das baterias carregadas, seguimos em direccao a Yungaburra, uma pequena vila nos Planaltos. Esta vila e' aparentemente a casa de uma comunidade de ornitorrincos.. mas nos tivemos problemas em ver um!!
Yungaburra is also the home of the Curtain Fig Tree, which is quite spectacular.
Em Yungaburra tambem vive a Cortina de Figueira (traducao directa), que tambem e' espectacular.
After Yungaburra, we continued our Big Icons odyssey. First up was a drive south to Tarzali Lakes... home of the Big Fish! He was very happy to be added to the list.
Depois de Yungaburra, continuamos a Odisseia dos Grandes Icones. O primeiro foi o Grande Peixe em Lagos Tarzali. Ele ficou muito feliz por ser integrado na lista!
Following our departure from Tarzali, we headed out to the historic village of Herberton. Fascinating! We left Herberton 3 minutes later and headed to another highlight of the trip. We travelled on the Highest road to the Highest town in Queensland, Ravenshoe, where we lunched. Ravenshoe is 930 metres above sea level.
Depois da nossa partida de Tarzali, continuamos rumo a historica vila de Herberton. Fascinante! 3 minutos depois deixamos Herbenton em direccao a um dos melhores pontos da viagem. Viajamos na Estrada mais alta em direccao a Ravenshoe que e' a vila mais alta em Queensland. Ravenshoe esta a 930m acima do nivel do mar.
As you can see, when you are up that high, the weather doesn't alway co-operate with you. Although it is a great place for a wind farm.
Como podem ver, quando se esta la no alto o tempo nem sempre ajuda mas e' sem duvida um excelente lugar para um parque eolico.
Leaving the winter weather behind, we headed down from the tablelands to Innisfail, our stop for the night. After checking in, we headed down to Paronella Park for an evening tour. Paronella Park is a beautiful castle and gardens set in the rainforest.
Deixando o tempo de Inverno para tras. Seguimos para Innisfail onde passamos a noite. Depois de fazermos o check-in fomos para Paronella Park para uma excursao nocturna, Paronella Park e' composto por um castelo e jardins fantasticos no meio da floresta tropical.
The gardens are set next to the Mena Creek Falls.
Os jardins ficam mesmo nas quedas de agua de Mena Creek.
In the creek there are fish, eels & turtles. They like to be fed... as you can see!
No riacho ha peixes, enguias & tartarugas que gostam que se lhes de comida.. como podem ver!
We started out early in the morning from Innisfail, as we had a big day planned on the trip down to Townsville. First stop was Mission Beach, home to the Big Cassowary. As we didn't exactly know where to find it, we headed towards the Tourist Information centre. Once we arrived, we thought we had found it. Unfortunately it wasn't as spectacular as we had hoped for!
Comecamos de manha cedo em Innisfail, tinhamos um grande dia planeado em direccao a Townsville. A primeira paragem foi Mission Beach onde vive o Grande Cassuar. Como nao sabiamos como o encontrar dirigimo-nos ao Posto de Turismo. Quando la chegamos, pensamos que o tinhamos encontrado. Infelizmente nao era tao espectacular como nos esperavamos!!
Thankfully on the way out of town, we headed south and ran across the authentic Big Cassowary. I think you'll agree it's a little bit better!
Felizmente quando ja estavamos a deixar a cidade em direccao a Sul vimos o verdadeiro Grande Cassuar. Acho que voces concordam que e' bem melhor!
Mission Beach is the jump-off point for Dunk Island... which you can see behind us in the photograph.

About 1 hours drive south of Mission Beach, you come to the small town of Tully. It is famous for it's claim to be the wettest place in Australia... although there are a couple of places that dispute this claim. To celebrate, Tully built themselves a Big Gumboot! It's height is equal to the Australian record rainfall for a year... 7.9 metres!
Mais ou menos uma hora a Sul de Mission Beach e' a pequena vila de Tully. E' famosa por querer ser conhecida como a vila onde mais chove na Australia.. mas ha dois outros sitios que dizem o mesmo! Para celebrar, Tully contruiu a Grande Galocha. A sua altura e' equivalente ao record de chuva na Australia num ano... 7.9metros!
Next stop on the Big Icons tour is Cardwell, home of the Big Crab! This used to be in front of a seafood restaurant... but it has closed down. Thankfully, the Crab remains.
A proxima paragem dos Grandes Icones e' em Cardwell, onde vive o Grande Caranguejo! Costumava estar em frente a um restaurante mas o restaurante fechou. Felizmente, o Caranguejo ainda la esta.
Next stop down the coast is the little town of Lucinda. Normally this little coastal town wouldn't get a second look... but it is the home of a pseudo big icon... Have a look!!
A proxima paragem na costa e' a pequena vila de Lucinda. Numa situacao normal ninguem lhe prestaria atencao mas aqui esta um pseudo Grande Icone.. Vejam!!
Finally we arrive in Townsville, which is a surprisingly beautiful city. It is right on the coast and has a very large hill right in the middle of the city. Once we checked into our hotel, we went for a walk to orientate ourselves with the city. As we were heading down to the Strand, which is the seaside esplanade, we came across an unexpected Big Icon. Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth.... It has crept onto the list!
Finalmente chegamos a Townsville que uma cidade surpreendentemente bonita. Fica mesmo na costa e tem um monte bem grande mesmo no meio da cidade. Depois de fazermos o check-in no hotel, fomos dar um passeio e conhecer um bocadinho da cidade. Quando estavamos a passear na marginal, deparamo-nos com um inesperado Grande Icone. A cavalo dado nao se olha o dente.. Mais um na lista!!

Another beautiful day awaited us when we hit the town on Saturday. We took the opportunity to head up to the top of Castle Hill, which offers stunning views of Townsville & Magnetic Island, which is just off the coast. Castle Hill is 238 metres above sea level.
Outro lindo dia esperou-nos no Sabado. Aproveitamos a oportunidade e subimos a Castle Hill que tem umas vistas magnificas de Townsville & Ilha Magnetic que fica mesmo ali perto da costa. Castle Hill fica a 238 metros acima do nivel do mar.
The initial reason for the trip was to head down to Townsville to watch North Queensland's new football team in their inaugural match of the A-League. They played Sydney FC and, although providing an exciting game, unfortunately lost 2-3. It was a great opportunity to see the legendary English & Liverpool player Robbie Fowler, and he didn't disappoint!
A razao pela qual inicialmente decidimos ir a Townsville foi para ver o jogo inaugural da nova equipa a representar o Norte de Queensland na Liga A - Fury (Furia). Jogamos contra Sydney FC embora tenha sido um bom jogo perdemos 2-3. Foi tambem um optima oportunidade para ver o legendario jogador ingles e do Liverpool Robbie Fowler, e ele nao nos desiludiu!
Unfortunately, Sunday morning arrived and our short break is now over. All that remained was a 414km drive home. We had a wonderful road trip, and amazingly while we were crossing the river just 1km from home, we were lucky enough to see a resident of North Queensland you wouldn't want to meet face to face. You need to look very carefully right in the middle of the photo, right on the river bank!
Infelizmente, Domingo de manha chegou e o nosso fim de semana prolonado acabou. Tudo o que nos restava eram 414km para chegar a casa. Fizemos uma viagem fantastica e, incrivelmente, a 1km de chegar a casa, ao passar numa ponte encontramos um residente do Norte de Queensland que voces nao iam querer ver cara a cara. Tem que ver a foto com muita atencao e perceber o que esta na margem!
