O primeiro de muitos / The first of many

Desculpem a demora mas ainda estavamos em lua de mel :) Pois e'.. ja passou um ano desde que nos demos o no. No passado dia 5 de Dezembro fez um ano que nos casamos. A vida continua a correr as mil maravilhas e cada dia que passa traz mais amor e alegria as nossas vidas. Para celebrar este primeiro aniversario de casamento o David organizou uma surpresa. Passamos um fim de semana fantastico num resort aqui perto de Port Douglas; chama-se Silky Oaks e foi um dos sitios mais tranquilizantes que ja estive. Um Bungalow virado para o rio, uma boa garrafa de vinho tinto e a floresta tropical.. A tarde nadamos no rio e, a noite, apreciamos o melhor jantar.. Tudo isto regado com diamantes e muito, muito amor. Esperamos que gostem das fotos e do pequeno video que apenas mostra um bocadinho da paz que vivemos neste dia tao especial.

Sorry for the delay but we still were on our honeymoon :) Yes.. It's been a year since we tied the knot. On the 5th of December was our first wedding anniversary. Life is still wonderful and each and every day brings more love and joy to our lives. To celebrate this first year of marriage David organised a surprise. We spent the weekend in a fantastic resort close to Port Douglas; it's called Silky Oaks and it was one of the most tranquil places I have ever been. A river house, a good bottle of red and the rainforest. We swam in the river in the afternoon and, at night, we enjoyed the best dinner. All this served with Diamonds and lots of love. We hope you like the photos and the short video that only shows a little bit of the peace we lived on that very special day.

A semana passada tivemos ca a Debye e a Sandy directamente dos Estados Unidos. Foram as nossas primeiras hospedes e o tempo passou a correr. Claro que nao podiamos deixar de lhes mostar a Grande Barreira de Coral e a Floresta Tropical. Aqui ficam umas fotos!

Last week we had Debye and Sandy visit from the US. They were our first guests and time flew by. Of course we had to show them the Great Barrier Reef and the Rainforest. Here you'll find some pictures!

Esta ultima fotografia e' de um cassuar. Ave em vias de extincao. Nao nos podemos aproximar mais porque elas sao perigosas e atacam seres humanos com muita facilidade. Esta fotografia foi tirada na berma da estrada quando estavamos de regresso a casa. Foi uma sorte ver uma.. Ja andavamos ha mais de uma ano a procura.. (O livro do Guinness classificou em 2007 o Cassuar como a ave mais perigosa do mundo)

This last picture is of a Cassowary. Endangered bird. We couldn't get any closer because they are dangerous to man and attack very easily. This picture was taken on the side of the road on our return journey. We were very lucky to see one.. We have been looking for more than a year.. (Guinness Book of World Records classifies the Cassowary as the most dangerous bird in the World)

Nao temos tido grandes novidades ultimamente a excepcao de duas amigas que chegam para a semana directamente dos Estados Unidos.. Entao ai vamos tirar umas fotos :)

Sabado bem passado / Saturday well spent :)

Ontem foi o nosso Sabado e, ao contrario do que normalmente acontece, resolvemos sair de casa e ir as compras em Cairns :) compramos umas coisinhas aqui para casa que eu ja andava de olho ha uns tempos e ainda deu tempo para eu comprar 2 pares de sandalias :) almocamos no McDonalds e a noite fomos ver os Taipans num jogo de basquetebol espectacular!! Fartamo-nos de aplaudir :) Foi um dia muito bem passado!! Na viagem de regresso a Port Douglas discutimos a vida em Queensland e concluimos que este e' um cantinho do mundo espectacular para se viver!! Hoje o meu querido marido foi jogar golfe toda a manha e a tarde vamos voltar a Cairns porque houve uma compra que nao ficou bem decidida :)

Yesterday was our Saturday and, against the usual, we decided to go shopping in Cairns :) we bought a couple of things I wanted for the house and there was a bit of time left for me to get a couple of pairs of sandals :) we had lunch at McDonalds and went to the basketball in the evening to watch the Taipans play a great game!! Cheering at all times :) It was a great day!! During our trip back to Port we discussed life in Queensland and concluded that this is a great little part of the world to live in!! Today my dear husband went to play golf all morning and in the afternoon we're going back to Cairns to finalise a purchase :)

Algumas novidades / Some news

A vida nos tropicos continua optima como ja e' costume. As temperaturas estao a comecar a aquecer (nao e' que alguma vez tenham arrecefecido mas...) e mais um mesito e ja nao se vive sem o ar condicionado 24/7!

A agua ja tem anemonas e os crocodilos ja comecaram a aparecer. Dizem os de ca que este ano o Verao vai ser muito agressivo.. Muito calor muita chuva. A ver vamos!! Lembram-se o ano passado?! Inundacoes no Norte e Incendios Florestais incontrolaveis no Sul.. provavelmente vai ser o mesmo este ano.

De resto esta tudo normal. O David esta a gostar do trabalho a tempo inteiro no campo de golfe e eu continuo por alto mar! Entretanto vamos programando a nossa viagem a Portugal.. Ja temos os dois as ferias aprovadadas de 1 a 30 de Junho de 2010. Estamos a espera que apareca uma boa promocao nos voos para comprar os bilhetes! :)

Life in the tropics is great as usual. Temperatures are starting to rise (not that they've ever been low..) and in another month we won't survive without the AC 24/7!

There is already jelly-fish in the water and the crocodiles have started to show up. The locals say this Summer will be severe.. Very hot and very wet. We'll see!! Remember last year?! Floods in the North and bush fires in the South.. probably its going to be the same this year.

Everything else is the same. David is enjoying his new full-time job at the Golf-Course and I'm still at sea! In the meantime we are planning our trip to Portugal.. Both our holidays have been approved from the 1st to the 30th of June 2010. We're only waiting for a good deal to book the flights! :)

Trip to Townsville / Viagem a Townsville

So it finally arrived. We had planned this trip to Townsville for a quite a while and we headed off on Thursday morning. After a quick drive up the Kuranda Range, we headed into Mareeba for our favourite coffee...

Finalmente chegou a hora. Tinhamos planeado esta viagem a Townsville ha um bom bocado e na Quinta-feira de manha la fomos. Depois de um curto trajecto ate Kuranda, seguimos em direccao a Mareeba para o nosso cafe favorito...

After our recharge, we headed to Yungaburra on the Tablelands, which is a small little village. It is allegedly home of a community of platypuses.... although we had trouble just seeing one!

Depois das baterias carregadas, seguimos em direccao a Yungaburra, uma pequena vila nos Planaltos. Esta vila e' aparentemente a casa de uma comunidade de ornitorrincos.. mas nos tivemos problemas em ver um!!

Yungaburra is also the home of the Curtain Fig Tree, which is quite spectacular.

Em Yungaburra tambem vive a Cortina de Figueira (traducao directa), que tambem e' espectacular.

After Yungaburra, we continued our Big Icons odyssey. First up was a drive south to Tarzali Lakes... home of the Big Fish! He was very happy to be added to the list.

Depois de Yungaburra, continuamos a Odisseia dos Grandes Icones. O primeiro foi o Grande Peixe em Lagos Tarzali. Ele ficou muito feliz por ser integrado na lista!

Following our departure from Tarzali, we headed out to the historic village of Herberton. Fascinating! We left Herberton 3 minutes later and headed to another highlight of the trip. We travelled on the Highest road to the Highest town in Queensland, Ravenshoe, where we lunched. Ravenshoe is 930 metres above sea level.

Depois da nossa partida de Tarzali, continuamos rumo a historica vila de Herberton. Fascinante! 3 minutos depois deixamos Herbenton em direccao a um dos melhores pontos da viagem. Viajamos na Estrada mais alta em direccao a Ravenshoe que e' a vila mais alta em Queensland. Ravenshoe esta a 930m acima do nivel do mar.

As you can see, when you are up that high, the weather doesn't alway co-operate with you. Although it is a great place for a wind farm.

Como podem ver, quando se esta la no alto o tempo nem sempre ajuda mas e' sem duvida um excelente lugar para um parque eolico.

Leaving the winter weather behind, we headed down from the tablelands to Innisfail, our stop for the night. After checking in, we headed down to Paronella Park for an evening tour. Paronella Park is a beautiful castle and gardens set in the rainforest.

Deixando o tempo de Inverno para tras. Seguimos para Innisfail onde passamos a noite. Depois de fazermos o check-in fomos para Paronella Park para uma excursao nocturna, Paronella Park e' composto por um castelo e jardins fantasticos no meio da floresta tropical.

The gardens are set next to the Mena Creek Falls.

In the creek there are fish, eels & turtles. They like to be fed... as you can see!

No riacho ha peixes, enguias & tartarugas que gostam que se lhes de comida.. como podem ver!

We started out early in the morning from Innisfail, as we had a big day planned on the trip down to Townsville. First stop was Mission Beach, home to the Big Cassowary. As we didn't exactly know where to find it, we headed towards the Tourist Information centre. Once we arrived, we thought we had found it. Unfortunately it wasn't as spectacular as we had hoped for!

Comecamos de manha cedo em Innisfail, tinhamos um grande dia planeado em direccao a Townsville. A primeira paragem foi Mission Beach onde vive o Grande Cassuar. Como nao sabiamos como o encontrar dirigimo-nos ao Posto de Turismo. Quando la chegamos, pensamos que o tinhamos encontrado. Infelizmente nao era tao espectacular como nos esperavamos!!

Thankfully on the way out of town, we headed south and ran across the authentic Big Cassowary. I think you'll agree it's a little bit better!

Felizmente quando ja estavamos a deixar a cidade em direccao a Sul vimos o verdadeiro Grande Cassuar. Acho que voces concordam que e' bem melhor!

Mission Beach is the jump-off point for Dunk Island... which you can see behind us in the photograph.

About 1 hours drive south of Mission Beach, you come to the small town of Tully. It is famous for it's claim to be the wettest place in Australia... although there are a couple of places that dispute this claim. To celebrate, Tully built themselves a Big Gumboot! It's height is equal to the Australian record rainfall for a year... 7.9 metres!

Mais ou menos uma hora a Sul de Mission Beach e' a pequena vila de Tully. E' famosa por querer ser conhecida como a vila onde mais chove na Australia.. mas ha dois outros sitios que dizem o mesmo! Para celebrar, Tully contruiu a Grande Galocha. A sua altura e' equivalente ao record de chuva na Australia num ano... 7.9metros!

Next stop on the Big Icons tour is Cardwell, home of the Big Crab! This used to be in front of a seafood restaurant... but it has closed down. Thankfully, the Crab remains.

A proxima paragem dos Grandes Icones e' em Cardwell, onde vive o Grande Caranguejo! Costumava estar em frente a um restaurante mas o restaurante fechou. Felizmente, o Caranguejo ainda la esta.

Next stop down the coast is the little town of Lucinda. Normally this little coastal town wouldn't get a second look... but it is the home of a pseudo big icon... Have a look!!

A proxima paragem na costa e' a pequena vila de Lucinda. Numa situacao normal ninguem lhe prestaria atencao mas aqui esta um pseudo Grande Icone.. Vejam!!

Finally we arrive in Townsville, which is a surprisingly beautiful city. It is right on the coast and has a very large hill right in the middle of the city. Once we checked into our hotel, we went for a walk to orientate ourselves with the city. As we were heading down to the Strand, which is the seaside esplanade, we came across an unexpected Big Icon. Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth.... It has crept onto the list!

Finalmente chegamos a Townsville que uma cidade surpreendentemente bonita. Fica mesmo na costa e tem um monte bem grande mesmo no meio da cidade. Depois de fazermos o check-in no hotel, fomos dar um passeio e conhecer um bocadinho da cidade. Quando estavamos a passear na marginal, deparamo-nos com um inesperado Grande Icone. A cavalo dado nao se olha o dente.. Mais um na lista!!

Another beautiful day awaited us when we hit the town on Saturday. We took the opportunity to head up to the top of Castle Hill, which offers stunning views of Townsville & Magnetic Island, which is just off the coast. Castle Hill is 238 metres above sea level.

Outro lindo dia esperou-nos no Sabado. Aproveitamos a oportunidade e subimos a Castle Hill que tem umas vistas magnificas de Townsville & Ilha Magnetic que fica mesmo ali perto da costa. Castle Hill fica a 238 metros acima do nivel do mar.

The initial reason for the trip was to head down to Townsville to watch North Queensland's new football team in their inaugural match of the A-League. They played Sydney FC and, although providing an exciting game, unfortunately lost 2-3. It was a great opportunity to see the legendary English & Liverpool player Robbie Fowler, and he didn't disappoint!

A razao pela qual inicialmente decidimos ir a Townsville foi para ver o jogo inaugural da nova equipa a representar o Norte de Queensland na Liga A - Fury (Furia). Jogamos contra Sydney FC embora tenha sido um bom jogo perdemos 2-3. Foi tambem um optima oportunidade para ver o legendario jogador ingles e do Liverpool Robbie Fowler, e ele nao nos desiludiu!

Unfortunately, Sunday morning arrived and our short break is now over. All that remained was a 414km drive home. We had a wonderful road trip, and amazingly while we were crossing the river just 1km from home, we were lucky enough to see a resident of North Queensland you wouldn't want to meet face to face. You need to look very carefully right in the middle of the photo, right on the river bank!

Infelizmente, Domingo de manha chegou e o nosso fim de semana prolonado acabou. Tudo o que nos restava eram 414km para chegar a casa. Fizemos uma viagem fantastica e, incrivelmente, a 1km de chegar a casa, ao passar numa ponte encontramos um residente do Norte de Queensland que voces nao iam querer ver cara a cara. Tem que ver a foto com muita atencao e perceber o que esta na margem!

1a licao!! 1st lesson!!

Ola a todos. Aqui nos tropicos esta tudo bem como sempre.

Hoje tive a minha primeira licao de golfe. O David tem andado a fazer-me a cabeca para comecar a jogar e agora com ele a trabalhar no campo de gofle nao podia ser melhor altura.. Nao sou nenhuma versao feminina do Tiger Woods mas para a primeira vez ate que nem foi mau de todo.. Vejam as fotos!! :)

Hello everyone. Here in the tropics all goes well as usual.

Today I had my first golf lesson. David has been trying to talk me into playing the game and now with him working at the course couldn't be better timing.. I'm not the female version of Tiger Woods but for the first time is wasn't too bad.. Have a look at the pictures!! :)

Hoje foi o melhor dia desde que comecei a trabalhar... Esteve um sol fantastico em Low Isles que eu adoro e tive o GRANDE PRAZER e PRIVILEGIO de conhecer o guarda-redes da seleccao da Australia de seu nome Mark Schwarzer!!!!!! Segundo o meu marido, o melhor guarda-redes do mundo!! Ele, a mulher e os 2 filhos passaram o dia connosco na Grande Barreira de Coral e foram uma simpatia! Tiramos fotos juntos e ate consegui um chapeu com uma dedicatoria para o David!.. (Tambem tenho aqui comigo uma copia autografada da fotografia!) Adorei! Forca Australia!

Today was the best day since I started working.. It was a gorgeous sunny day at Low Isles that I love and I had the GREAT PLEASURE AND PRIVILEGE to meet the Goalkeeper for Australia Mark Schwarzer!!!!!! According to my husband, the best goalkeeper in the world!! Him, his wife and the 2 kids spent the day with us on the Great Barrier Reef and were soo friendly! We had pictures taken together and I even got a hat signed and dedicated to David!.. (I've got a copy of this picture with his autograph too!) Loved it! Go Australia!

De regresso ao trabalho / Back to work

Finalmente de regresso ao trabalho. A minha mao ja esta quase normal e ontem regressei aos barcos :)

Finally back to work. My hand is nearly back to normal and yesterday I went back to the boats :)

Trip to the Atherton Tableland / Viagem aos Planaltos de Atherton

We have just come back from a little day trip/overnight from the Atherton Tableland. We started out with our packed picnic lunch and headed out from Port Douglas. We headed south to Mt. Molloy and enjoyed beautiful views as we climbed the mountain.

Acabamos de chegar do nosso passeio de 1 dia aos Planaltos de Atherton. Preaparamos uma merenda para fazer um picnic a hora do almoco e saimos de Port Douglas. Partimos em direccao a Sul para Mt. Molloy and admiramos as vistas maravilhosas enquanto subiamos a montanha.

Shortly after we were on the Savannah lands of Far North Queensland.

Pouco depois, estavamos na savana de Far North Queensland.

After about an hour of driving we hit the town of Mareeba. It's quite large for the area and it is a big area for growing coffee and peanuts. We stopped at the Mareeba Coffee Works and had probably the second best coffee we have ever had in Australia. (After our own Nespresso machine :) )

Depois de mais ou menos uma hora a conduzir, chegamos a Mareeba. E' uma cidade grande para aqueles lados e e' popular pela producao de cafe e amendoins. Paramos em Mareeba Coffee Works e tomamos provavelmente o segundo melhor cafe que alguma vez tomamos na Australia. (O primeiro sai directamente da nossa Nespresso machine :) )

About 20 minutes after Mareeba, we came across one of the highlights of the trip. It was Big Icon #7 on our list... The Big Peanut! Which isn't really that big by the icons standard... but a peanut starts small too! :)

Mais ou menos 20 minutos depois de Mareeba, apareceu-nos um dos melhores momentos da viagem. O Grande Icone numero 7 na nossa lista.. O Grande Amendoim! Nao e' muito grande comparado com o tamanho dos outros icones mas tambem os amendoins sao tao pequeninos! :)

We continued on through Atherton, which is the largest town on the Tableland, and continued heading south. We next ventured in the Mt Hypipamee National Park. We had seen a sign for The Crater and we were curious about what it was. We have included a short video to invite you along...

Continuamos por Atherton, que e' a maior cidade nos Planaltos e seguimos rumo ao sul. A proxima aventura foi no Parque Nacional Mt. Hypipamee. Tinahmos visto um sinal para A Cratera e estavamos curiosos sobre o que seria. Incluimos um video para voces verem..

After our stunning time at the Crater, we continued across the Cardwell Range and stopped at the Millaa Millaa lookout, which had stunning views over the plains.

Depois do fantastico momento na Cratera, continuamos na cordilheira de Cardwell e paramos no miradouro de Millaa Millaa que tinha umas vistas fantasticas sobre os planaltos.

Our main objective heading this far south was to do the "Waterfall Circuit", a 15 km roundtrip road with 3 waterfalls to visit. The first waterfall is the very beautiful Millaa Millaa falls, shown below.

A razao pela qual fomos tanto a Sul foi para fazer o "Circuito das Quedas-de-Agua", um circuito de 15km com 3 quedas-de-agua para visitar. A primeira e' a lindissima queda-de-agua de Millaa Milla na foto em baixo.

Next up on the circuit was the Zillie falls. This was a little difficult to get a great photo as you can only view the falls from the top.

A proxima no circuito e' a queda-de-agua de Zillie. Esta foi um bocado dificil de tirar uma boa foto porque so da para ver de cima.

The last waterfall on the ciruit is the Ellinjaa falls. These were accesible by a 10 minute walk through the rainforest.

A ultima no circuito e' a queda-de-agua de Ellinjaa. Esta era acessivel depois de uma caminhada de 10 minutos pela Floresta Tropical.

After we departed the "Waterfall Circuit" we headed east back towards the coast towards Innisfail, which is a very large Sugar town. On the way, we saw the cane trains plying their trade..

Depois de deixarmos o circuito das quedas-de-agua, seguimos rumo a Este em direccao a Innisfail que e' uma cidade muito grande na producao de acucar. Pelo caminho vimos os comboios a transportar a sua mercadoria (cana de acucar!)..

and also saw (for the first time) a Cane field fire. They usually burn after the harvest to get rid of all the debris and any stray snakes :)

e vimos tambem (pela primeira vez) um campo de cana de acucar a arder. Eles normalmente pegam fogo aos campos depois da colheita para se livrarem qualquer tipo de restos e algumas cobras que tenham ficado para tras :)

After our long day, we headed back up the coast from Innisfail to Palm Cove, a distance of about 115km. We went to a lovely Greek restaurant for dinner that night and spent the night in a very nice hotel.

Depois do nosso longo dia, seguimos em direccao a costa de Innisfail para Palm Cove, uma distancia de mais ou menos 115km. Jantamos num restaurante grego e passamos a noite num hotel muito fixe.

All in all, we had a wonderful day....added a "Big Icon" and we can't wait for our next trip to Townsville in August for the football. There will be a couple of more "Icons" added then too!

No final, tivemos um dia maravilhoso.. aumentamos um "Grande Icone" a nossa lista e mal podemos esperar pela nossa viagem a Townsville em Agosto para ver o futebol. Tambem entao vamos acrescentar mais dois "Grandes" a nossa lista!
